Extending public computer time... how libraries do it

I ran across an excellent post on the CALIX list this week (California libraries) that was worth sharing. Kathleen K. Smith, Projects Librarian at the Fresno County Public Library took it upon herself to ask, "what is your policy for when a patron asks for an extended period of time to complete their work on the public computers?" And then she shared the responses! Read on to find out what California libraries do in this situation.

Last night I returned from a week-long trip to Colorado--a much-needed respite after the craziness leading up to ALA. While in Colorado, I stopped by the John C. Fremont Library in Florence, CO to check in on some new friends who happen to be doing some incredible stuff at their library.

You didn't happen to bring your ID, did you?

She peered over at me, eyebrow raised, and asked, "how old are you?"

Unprepared to answer such a personal question, I stumbled and paused, mouth opened.
