Gaming and Online Education at the Library During Tough Economic Times

Last week our good friend, astute colleague and soon-to-be-mom Brenda Hough forwarded two articles that made me think about the role that libraries play in their communities during tough economic time.

There's a lot of excitement brewing here at TechSoup about new projects and new directions. You may have noticed some changes on our site that are just the beginning. But there are some other changes that are less techie, less project-focused, too.

Collaborative Cataloging

Donna Feddern (a former colleague who now works in the San Diego area) passed along a link to this story about LibraryThing’s effort to organize “flash-mob cataloging events” at small libraries. 18 volunteer catalogers recently descended on the Audobon Society Library of Rhode Island and cataloged 2500 items in a single day. The catalogers included a mix of 3 professional librarians and 15 book-lovers, library-lovers and LibraryThing fans.
