Preservation Week @ Your Library: pass it on

April 22-28 is Preservation Week @ your library. Libraries, museums, archives and other organizations help preserve our cultural history. Over 4.8 billion artifacts are held in public trust in the United States. During Preservation Week, libraries offer events, activities, and resources that showcase how to preserve our personal and shared collections.

Resources for Participating Libraries

• Two free webinars offered by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services include Taking Care: Family Textiles (April 24), and Preserving Personal Digital Photographs (April 26). Visit the ALCTS website for details.
• New York Times best-selling author Steve Berry is the first national spokesperson for Preservation Week. Berry and his wife, Elizabeth, founded History Matters, a nonprofit dedicated to aiding the preservation of the fragile reminders of our past. You can download Berry's recorded public service announcements for free.

Need Funding?

Grants for preservation related projects are currently available from the NEH, the The National Historical Publications and Records Commission Grants, and various Presidential Libraries grants. Also, many foundations give grants for preservation. See this amazing resource, Foundation Grants for Preservation in Libraries, Archives, and Museums, 2010 Edition (free PDF), provided by the Library of Congress and the Foundation Center, which lists 2,270 foundation grants of $5,000 or more.
