In honor of TechSoup's StoryMakers challenge kicking off in a few weeks, I wanted to help you get inspired by other libraries. Instagram is a great tool for exploring how other libraries tell their story. Yup, I'm telling you to go lurk some other libraries! Here are a few of my new follows:
1. Piscataway Public Library
Located in Central New Jersey, the Piscataway Public Library boasts a Make It Yourself (MiY) makerspace, technology training courses, and programming for patrons of all ages. Their Instagram account gives a glimpse into the creations their makerspace is generating as well as recommended reads and event announcements. I also like how they used Instagram to advertise a contest to win a free thank you gift.
2. Abilene Public Library
The Abilene Public Library's Instagram account is a fun mix of happenings among the system's three branches and memes. You'll find pictures of lucky Amazon Kindle winners from this Texas library's summer reading book challenge alongside Doctor Who/Dr. Seuss mash-ups. They also smartly use hashtags to attract Instagram users that might be outside of the library's community. Perhaps it might inspire them to go to their own local library?
3. Vestavia Hills Library
Known as the "Library in the Forest," the brand new Vestavia Hills Library building is the state of Alabama's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified facility. The library's Instagram account is a great way to see this modern library and the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. Community members can also keep up with changes happening with the library, such as a new parking lot expansion and the addition of a Nook HD e-reader lending program.
4. Franklin Park Public Library
The Franklin Park Public Library, located in Illinois, has an Instagram account dedicated to its teen programming. Some of my favorite pictures are from the library's Donate Your Prom Dress campaign. Using Instagram is a great way to spread awareness about a campaign hosted in the library. The library also smartly used the hashtags associated with the campaign to boost the images' visibility.
